Discovering a movie as it unfolds

In 2015, I watched Interstellar because I liked the director and the cast — and I’d heard it was great — but I knew almost nothing else about it. I didn’t know where the story was going or what to expect moment to moment.

That lack of information became part of the experience. Watching without a roadmap made each scene feel more tense and meaningful, because I genuinely didn’t know what might happen next or how situations would unfold.

Even smaller elements benefited from that approach. My impressions evolved gradually as the movie revealed information on its own terms. Nothing was rushed or previewed ahead of time — it all had room to land naturally.

By the end, the experience felt unusually immersive. Not because of any single moment, but because the movie had earned its impact by letting the story reveal itself.

Afterward, I watched the trailer and realized how different the experience could have been. Seeing key elements ahead of time — even without full context — would have reshaped those reactions. That’s when it really clicked for me.

The philosophy

Since then, I’ve stopped watching trailers. Movies haven’t all become better — but the best ones have become more memorable. Going in without expectations leaves room for surprise, tension, and emotional shifts that trailers often flatten.
